The sorted column is metabolisable energy per kilogram of food as sold, taken from each manufacturer's calorie content statement rather than computed here. Across the 112 foods that publish it the figure runs 922 kcal/kg to 5,400 kcal/kg — a 5.9-fold spread, which is why a scoop size carried over from one food to another is a guess dressed as a habit.
Density is mostly a question of what has been taken out. Water carries no calories, so the rows at the top of this list are the ones with the least of it left in and the rows at the bottom are largely water. That makes this a portioning fact before it is anything else: a food up here feeds the same dog from a smaller scoop, and it is the reason price per pound means nothing until it is converted — cost per 1,000 kcal does that conversion.
11 of the 123 formulas in the database publish no calorie figure at all, so they are absent from the table rather than parked at the bottom of it: a value nobody published is not a zero, and we name every manufacturer that withholds one. 10 of the 40 rows share their value with at least one other row, and ties are broken alphabetically, which means the order inside a tie carries no information. The table stops at 40 rows; the other 72 eligible formulas are in the full index.
What the order does not mean: dense is neither good nor bad. It sets how big the scoop is, how long a bag lasts and how much a small measuring error costs in calories; it says nothing about ingredient quality or about whether a food suits a particular dog. Read from the other end it is the least calorie-dense list, the same data and equally not a recommendation. Weight is a clinical matter: set a target and a rate with a veterinarian, then use the calculator for the arithmetic.
