Least calorie-dense dog foods

Low calorie density is usually moisture, not a diet claim. A food at 950 kcal/kg simply means a larger serving by weight for the same energy; it says nothing on its own about whether it suits a dog that needs to lose weight.

The order is one number the manufacturer published, sorted low to high. It is not a score, not a shortlist and not a recommendation: no row here is endorsed over any other, and a food's position tells you what its label says, not whether it suits your dog.

How to read this list from the bottom up

Same column and the same 187 foods as the most calorie-dense ranking, read from the other end: metabolisable energy per kilogram of food as sold, lowest first, taken from each manufacturer's own calorie content statement. Across the database the figure runs 741 kcal/kg to 5,400 kcal/kg.

Low density is almost always moisture rather than a formulation decision. A recipe at 741 kcal/kg is mostly water, which means a larger serving by weight for the same energy, more packaging and shipping per calorie, and — once price is converted — usually a higher cost per 1,000 kcal. It does not make a food "light": lightness would be fewer calories in the bowl, which is a portion decision, not a label value.

16 of the 203 formulas in the database publish no calorie figure at all, so they are absent from the table rather than parked at the bottom of it: a value nobody published is not a zero, and we name every manufacturer that withholds one. 11 of the 40 rows share their value with at least one other row, and ties are broken alphabetically, which means the order inside a tie carries no information. The table stops at 40 rows; the other 147 eligible formulas are in the full index.

What the order does not mean: this is not a weight-management list, and BowlGrade publishes none. Energy per kilogram of food is not energy per day — what a dog actually eats is portion multiplied by density, and a low-density food served generously delivers more calories than a dense one served carefully. Weight loss in a dog is a clinical process with a target weight, a rate and a monitoring plan attached, and the number in this column is an input to it at most.
