Dog foods suitable for puppies
Edition updated
A food is suitable for a puppy when its adequacy statement covers growth — either explicitly or through an all-life-stages claim. Watch the qualifier: some all-life-stages foods exclude the growth of dogs expected to reach 70 lb or more, which is a real distinction for large-breed puppies and not a marketing footnote.

What covers growth, and what that does not settle
A food covers a growing dog when its published adequacy statement covers growth — either explicitly, or through an all-life-stages claim, which by definition includes growth and reproduction.
Every food on this page carries such a statement, published by its manufacturer, and is listed for that reason alone. Foods that carry a life-stage word in their marketing but no adequacy statement on the maker's public pages are excluded. An unsourced life stage is a claim we would be making rather than one they made, and that is the one thing this site refuses to do.
Read the qualifier. Many all-life-stages statements add including growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult), and some exclude it. The excluded case is a real distinction for a puppy expected to grow large, because the large-size growth profile constrains calcium in a way the general growth profile does not. Each statement is quoted word for word on the food's own page, so you can read the qualifier instead of taking our summary of it.
This page is not a recommendation, a ranking or a shortlist. Which of these a particular puppy should eat, and how much of it, is a veterinary question and a body-condition question, not a table lookup.
52 formulas from 16 brands match this filter today. 51 publish a guaranteed analysis, 1 publishes typical dry-matter values instead; 46 publish a calorie statement, 51 an ingredient list and 52 an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Of those statements 39 explicitly cover the growth of large-size dogs and 12 explicitly exclude it; the remaining 1 say nothing either way, which is not the same as covering it. Dry-matter protein across the 52 that publish it runs 24% to 44.7%, median 31.8% — against 18.7% to 50% across the whole database.
How membership is decided
Suitability here reflects the published AAFCO claim only. Portion and brand choice for an individual puppy is a conversation with your veterinarian.
